Advair, sometimes spelled Adavair, is a prescription medication that is used to treat the causes of asthma symptoms, including constriction and inflammation. Advair is a mixture of two different types of medicine, a bronchodilator, which helps to relax the muscles that surround the airway, and an inhaled corticosteroid, which reduces inflammation in the airways.
Advair is used as a preventative treatment to keep these symptoms from occurring. It should only be used by patients whose asthma symptoms are unable to be controlled by long-term asthma medications. Advair cannot be used to treat asthma symptoms that occur suddenly, or to replace emergency inhalers. Advair is a preventative medication, and is taken on a prescribed schedule throughout the day: one inhalation twice a day, every day, in the morning and at night.
While taking Advair, patients should carry their rescue inhalers with them at all times, in case of an emergency. There are two types of Advair: Advair Diskus, which is used for asthma patients ages 4 to 11, and Advair HFA, which is used in patients ages 12 and up. Advair is available in three different strengths. Your health care provider will be able to determine which strength of this medication is appropriate for your condition.
