Advicor is a combination of vitamin B3, also called niacin, and a statin drug called lovastatin. Statin drugs reduce total cholesterol levels, increase levels of "good cholesterol," or HDL, and decrease levels of "bad cholesterol", or LDL. Advicor is used to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke due to high cholesterol levels. Advicor also reduces blood triglyceride levels to further reduce the risk of heart disease.
Advicor is usually taken once per day with an evening meal. If you are taking Advicor, eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and follow your doctor's dietary recommendations. Do not drink alcohol when taking Advicor. When taking any statin drug, avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Chemicals in the grapefruit products can interfere with the statin drug and cause adverse reactions. If you are taking cholestyramine or colestipol, do not take these medications within 4 to 6 hours of taking Advicor.
Side effects of the statin drug in Advicor include headache, dizziness, skin rash, back pain, cold symptoms, indigestion, and diarrhea. In rare cases, severe side effects such as kidney or liver disease occur with Advicor. This risk is increased if you have current or past kidney or liver problems. Regular monitoring for blood cholesterol levels and liver enzyme levels is required for patients taking Advicor. Side effects of niacin include skin flushing, dizziness, sweating, increased blood sugar, and fast heart rate. The side effects of niacin go away after the medication has been taken for a while.
