Benicar and Benicar HCT are angiotensin II receptor antagonists. This means it helps to control the smooth muscles of the heart preventing them from abnormaly constricting, which helps to control high blood pressure and hypertension. The added HCT helps reduce the amount of salt and water in the body by acting on the kidneys to increase the flow of urine, lowering blood pressure.
Pregnant women should not take Benicar or Benicar HCT. Consuming this drug can cause severe damage to the fetus and possible death. Nursing mothers should use extreme caution when taking this medication. Children and the elderly may take this medication but should be monitored carefully by a doctor. Diabetics should use caution when taking Benicar.
It is important to notify the physician of any and all medications taken, including vitamins and supplements. Benicar interacts adversely reacts with a number of different drugs. Alcohol and narcotics can cause severe impairment or even death when taken concurrently. Overly strenuous exercise and extreme temperatures should be avoided while on this medication.
The usual adult dose is 20mg (1 tablet) per day, with child doses varying. Common side effects include dizziness, fever, runny nose and coughing. Rarer ones include joint stiffness and swelling of the face. Prolonged conditions should immediately be reported to a doctor.
