About Bentyl
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Bentyl.
Bentyl is an antispasmodic medication prescribed to patients who are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder of the large intestine, or colon, which causes abdominal pain and cramps, gas, bloating and diarrhea. The medication relieves symptoms by relaxing muscles in the intestines and stomach and by slowing normal activity in these organs.
The drug is normally taken four times a day: once before each meal and once before bedtime. The prescribing physician usually starts the patient on a daily dose of 80 mg and increases it if necessary. People taking Bentyl must follow their physician's instructions carefully to minimize its many known side effects.
The two main side effects of taking Bentyl are constipation and drowsiness. Patients should include plenty of fiber in their diet and drink a generous amount of water while using Bentyl to minimize constipation. People taking Bentyl should lessen their use of alcohol and other medications that cause drowsiness until they see how Bentyl affects them.
Several other drugs minimize the effectiveness of Bentyl or reduce its absorption into the body. Antacids, steroids, antidepressants, diet pills, heart rhythm regulators and treatments for Parkinson's disease are all known to interact with Bentyl. The use and dosage of these medications must be carefully monitored by the attending physician.
