Betoptic S is a beta blocker prescribed to reduce the increased pressure inside the eye which occurs in conditions such as open angle glaucoma. It may also be used to treat ocular hypertension, or used in other disorders of the eyes to prevent blindness. It is applied to the affected eye by the drop. It's absorbed by the ocular tissues and works directly to reduce the volume of fluids produced inside the eye.

To reduce the chance of infection, Betoptic S should be applied with clean, freshly washed hands. The dropper tip should never be allowed to touch any other surface, including the eye itself. If more than one drop is prescribed, patients should wait at least five minutes before applying the second drop. If a dose is missed, it should be administered as soon as it is remembered. If there are less than two hours remaining to the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped in favor of resuming the normal dosing schedule.

Though Betoptic S controls the symptoms of glaucoma, it is not a cure. Patients should not stop taking this medication without consulting their health care providers.

Betoptic S has some known side effects, but most are not serious. They may include minor eye irritation, watery eyes, dizziness, headache, or insomnia. More serious side effects are rare, but might include changes in vision, difficulty breathing, or eye pain. Patients who experience side effects that interfere with normal, daily functioning should consult their eye health professional as soon as possible.
