Boniva is a prescription medication used to treat or prevent development of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Boniva belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates that slow down bone demineralization and increase bone remineralization, slowing loss of bone density and increasing overall bone mass. Boniva makes it less likely that bone fractures will occur in patients with osteoporosis.
60 minutes after taking a Boniva tablet, the patient should not recline or lie down, because Boniva can cause problems with the stomach and esophagus. Boniva tablets should be taken first thing in the morning with a full glass of water, 60 minutes before eating, drinking anything but water, or taking any other medications. Some patients taking bisphosphonates develop bone loss in the jaw, or osteonecrosis. Patients taking Boniva will need regular bone mineral density tests.
2.50mg Boniva tablets are taken daily, and 150mg Boniva tablets are taken monthly. Boniva injections are given every 3 months. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and other medications may interfere with the effectiveness of Boniva.
