About Cipro
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Cipro.
Cipro is a brand name for ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic agent that is prescribed for the treat bacterial infections. It is most often used to prevent anthrax outbreaks after exposure, or to slow the infection once it has occurred. Cipro is also used to treat urinary tract infections.
This medication may be sold under other brand names, but the various brands are not interchangeable. Patients who have been prescribed Cipro should make sure they continue taking Cipro for the full course of treatment.
Cipro is extremely effective in treating bacterial infections, but its effectiveness is limited by ingestion of supplements, foods, or medications which contain large percentages of calcium, iron, or zinc. Over the counter medicines such as antacids and foods such as dairy products should be taken six hours before, or two hours after taking Cipro.
Many other medications interact with Cipro. Patients should disclose all current medications and supplements to their health care provider before taking Cipro.
Cipro is known to cause nervousness, sleeplessness, and anxiety. Patients should restrict their caffeine intake while taking Cipro and be sure to drink plenty of water or other decaffeinated liquids during the course of treatment. Cipro is also known to increase the risk of tendinitis and tendon ruptures during treatment and for some weeks afterward. Patients should use caution in physical activities during and after Cipro treatments.
The full course of this antibiotic should be taken, even if the patient starts to feel better before the treatment is complete. A missed dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. If the time interval left before the next dose is too close, the dose should be skipped in favor of resuming the normal schedule.
Cipro has some known side effects, though not everyone experiences them. They may include nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, accelerated heartbeat, drowsiness, diarrhea, skin rashes, numbness and tingling, confusion, hallucinations, or reduced urination.
