Climara is a form of estrogen used to treat low hormone levels in women after menopause or surgical removal of the ovaries. Worn as a patch that releases the hormone directly through the skin, Climara relieves symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness, itching and burning. It can assist with bone density as well, helping to prevent osteoporosis, and is sometimes used for younger women who do not produce adequate estrogen.

In women who have not had a hysterectomy, it's recommended that Climara be given with a progestin to help prevent endometrial hyperplasia, an overgrowth within the lining of the uterus; in some cases, this condition can develop into cancer.

Pregnant women should not use Climara, as it can cause birth defects. If you become pregnant, discontinue use and contact your doctor. Nursing mothers also should not use Climara.

A medical exam is recommended before using Climara, including breast and pelvic exam, Pap smear and endometrial biopsy. Blood tests to determine liver function, calcium, blood glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol are also recommended. Regular monitoring should occur within the first six months, and at least annually thereafter.

Estrogen therapy has been known to increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, dementia and breast cancer. Smoking increases some of these risks. Discuss any history of these diseases, and also high blood pressure, migraines, diabetes, liver disease, kidney problems, epilepsy, high cholesterol, gallbladder problems or asthma.

Tell your doctor if you experience unusual vaginal bleeding. Seek emergency care if you experience chest pain; numbness or weakness on one side of your body; severe, sudden headache; confusion or problems with vision or speech; pain or swelling in the lower leg, or in the stomach or abdominal region; jaundice; or a breast lump.

Climara may cause dizziness, breast swelling, edema in the hands or feet, nausea, headache, spotting or depression. Avoid alcohol, as it may increase dizziness.
