About Clindoxyl Gel
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Clindoxyl Gel.
Clindoxyl Gel is a topical application which combines clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide, and is prescribed to treat mild, moderate, and severe acne. Available in the United States as Duac Gel, drying agents are combined with an antibiotic which is known to kill the bacteria that causes acne eruptions.
In several clinical trials, Clindoxyl Gel was proven to be significantly more effective than benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin alone in treating inflammatory acne. Subjects using the medication as directed experienced a much greater improvement in the skin's appearance and overall health than those who were using either constituent substance alone.
Patients who are prescribed Clindoxyl Gel are directed to wash the affected areas of the face with mild soap, taking care not to aggravate the skin, then to pat dry gently. A thin layer of the medication should be applied over the skin, rubbing gently until the gel is absorbed. Traces of the medication may linger on the hands afterward. To avoid the risk of contact with the eyes or other mucous membranes, patients should wash their hands thoroughly after each application.
Clindoxyl Gel should be used regularly, as directed by a health care provider, to achieve the best effects. The entire prescription should be used by the patient, even after improvement is seen. Patients should only use the amount of gel recommended by their health care providers, as using more of the medication will not hasten improvement. If an application is missed, the next one should not be "doubled up" to compensate for the missed dose. Patients should resume their regular application schedule instead.
Side effects from using Clindoxyl Gel are usually not serious. Some patients experience temporary dryness, peeling, burning, or redness of the skin. If any of these symptoms become serious or persistent, they should be reported to the patient's health care provider as soon as possible.
More serious side effects are rare, but include severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, or bloody stools.
Patients who experience any symptoms of allergic reaction, such as swelling of the mouth, lips, or tongue, hives, itching, or difficulty breathing should contact their health care provider immediately.
