Clomid is a potent fertility drug, prescribed to cause ovulation in women who wish to become pregnant. It is a type of ovulatory stimulant, and works in the same fashion as estrogen to cause eggs to develop and be released by the ovaries. In clinical trials of over 7500 women, approximately 30% were able to become pregnant after being treated with Clomid. Almost 8% percent of these women experienced a "multiple pregnancy" as a result.
In cases where women experience abnormal menstrual cycles or fibrous cysts in the breasts, Clomid might be prescribed. This medication is also occasionally used to treat male infertility.
For fertility, Clomid is started on the fifth day of the menstrual cycle. It is taken by mouth, once a day, for five days. The precise dose should be taken about the same time every day. The timing of each dose is important. If a patient misses a dose, she should consult her health care provider right away.
Side effects from Clomid treatments are uncommon, and usually do not pose difficulties. There is a noted blurring of vision which sometimes occurs, so patients are advised not to drive or perform other tasks where visual impairment might cause harm. More common side effects may include hot flashes or flushing, ovarian enlargement, breast tenderness, or some minor abdominal soreness.
