About Crestor
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Crestor.
Crestor is a drug classed as a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, or statin. It is prescribed for people who have high levels of triglycerides and the bad cholesterol, LDL. Crestor works to reduce the bad cholesterol produced by the liver and raise the level of good cholesterol, HDL. A doctor prescribing this medication for a patient may recommend that the patient lose weight, exercise daily, and quit smoking. Patients who have coronary heart disease may also benefit from taking Crestor.
Crestor is taken once daily at the same time, before or after a meal. A forgotten dose can be taken as soon as the patient remembers, but at least twelve hours must pass between doses. Antacids that contain magnesium hydroxide and aluminum cannot be taken at the same time as Crestor. Patients should wait a minimum of two hours to take an antacid after taking Crestor.
The starting dose for Crestor is usually the 10mg tablet. The attending physician will check the patient's cholesterol levels after two to four weeks of treatment with Crestor to determine if the dose needs to be adjusted. To get the best results, patients should follow a low fat, low cholesterol diet recommended by their doctor before starting to take Crestor, and continue the diet while taking the medication.
Patients who suffer from thyroid conditions or diabetes should be carefully monitored by their physician to ensure the dosages for all of their medications are at the right level. Women who take birth control pills may also need their dose of Crestor adjusted. The dosage for people of Asian descent should be reviewed frequently, as studies have shown that their bodies absorb more of the drug than other people.
