About Diovan

Diovan is an angiotensin II inhibitor, used primarily in the treatment of high blood pressure and hypertension. It is also used with a combination of other hypertensive drugs sometimes to help with heart failure. Diovan works by counteracting the process by which the blood vessels tighten. By opening them up, the blood can flow better, causing the reduction in blood pressure.

Pregnant women should avoid this medication as damage to the fetus is likely. Women who are nursing should use caution when taking Diovan. Pediatric and geriatric use is fine as long as it is monitored carefully, but use by those under age 6 is not recommended.

The most common adult dosage is either 80 or 160mg once a day for hypertension, which can be taken with or without food. Children often receive 20mg twice a day. Aiding with heart failure usually requires 40mg twice a day, as it is combined with other drugs. A missed dose should be taken as soon as possible, but it is not recommended to take it if it is too close to the next dose.

When taking Diovan, dizziness or lightheadedness may occur, especially if you have been taking a diuretic (water pill). Other side effects include nausea and shortness of breath. Consult a physician for prolonged or unusual side effects.
