Durolane is a medication used to help control osteoarthritis pain in the knee and hip joints. People who cannot control this type of pain using over-the-counter pain killers, exercise, and healthy lifestyle changes may find Durolane to be an effective treatment.

Durolane occurs as a transparent gel which helps provide cushioning and lubrication in a normal joint. It contains high levels of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Durolane is injected directly into the affected joint to improve mobility and reduce pain. One injection of Durolane can provide relief for osteoarthritis pain for up to 6 months. Patients should avoid any strenuous activity (such as exercise, heavy lifting or excessive standing) for the 48 hours following their Durolane injection.

Some patients may experience mild side effects when undergoing therapy with Durolane. Stiffness localized to the knee, swelling, or transient pain are the most common side effects reported. If any of these symptoms last for more than a week, a physician should be consulted.

Durolane injections can be repeated, as Durolane has been demonstrated to be safe for repeat treatment. Patients, along with their physicians, can determine the optimal time for repeat treatment.

Individuals who have a sensitivity to hyaluronic acid (HA) based products should not use Durolane, nor should anyone who has an infection or skin disease around the potential injection site, or a knee joint that is inflamed or infected. Special precaution should be taken in patients who have venous or lymphatic stasis in either of their legs. Durolane has not been tested in children or in pregnant and/or breast-feeding mothers.
