About Flomax
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Flomax.
Flomax is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) where urine flow is impeded. BPH involves an enlarged prostate gland and also constriction of the bladder opening. Flomax blocks certain adrenoreceptors, causing the smooth muscles of the prostate and bladder neck to relax, thus improving urine flow.
Flomax is taken once a day, preferably at the same time each day, roughly 30 minutes after a meal. Capsules time the release of medication into the bloodstream and should be swallowed whole, without opening, chewing or crushing the capsule.
Because it lowers blood pressure, Flomax may cause dizziness when the regimen is started, or if the user stands up too quickly from a seated or reclined position. Fainting is also possible. If these effects occur, lie down for a period of time. If this is not enough, intravenous fluids or vasopressors may help. Passing dizziness does not mean you should stop taking Flomax, however care should be taken when driving, operating machinery or during other hazardous activities. If symptoms become severe, discuss the matter with your physician.
Despite the effect on blood pressure, Flomax is not intended as a remedy for hypertension. Symptoms of BPH are similar to those of prostate cancer, and an exam should be performed to rule out carcinoma. Treatment with Flomax has not shown any effect on prostate specific antigen (PSA).
In some patients, dosage may be increased to 0.8 mg once a day, however if Flomax is discontinued for several days, the amount should begin again at 0.4 mg. While some studies report few issues with drug interactions, other information suggests there may be numerous interactions with Flomax. Be sure to tell your physician about all medications you take, including over-the-counter products.
