About Flovent
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Flovent.
Flovent is a corticosteroid drug used to prevent asthma attacks. It does not replace the need for a fast-acting rescue inhaler, because it is not effective in treating asthma attacks that have already begun. Flovent works by decreasing inflammation in the respiratory passageways.
Flovent is taken using an oral inhaler. Take the dosage that your doctor recommends, and do not change the dosage. Follow the manufacturer's instructions or ask your doctor or pharmacist for information about priming and using the inhaler. After using Flovent, rinse your mouth out with water to reduce the chance of developing an oral yeast infection. Flovent is usually used in combination with other medications to treat asthma. Talk to your doctor if your asthma symptoms do not improve for two weeks after using Flovent.
Side effects of Flovent include headache, dryness in the mouth and throat, sores or white patches in the mouth, cough, congestion, sinus discomfort, or hoarseness of voice. More serious side effects of Flovent are possible and require immediate medical attention: worsening asthma symptoms, breathing problems, signs of infection, vision problems or eye pain, weakness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, and skin rash and bruising. Children who use corticosteroids may have decreased growth. In addition, long-term use of steroid can cause a decrease in bone density, which increases the risk of fractures.
When taking Flovent, avoid people with infections, especially those with the chicken pox or measles. These diseases can be severe, even life-threatening if a person using corticosteroids contracts them. If you have been exposed, seek medical attention for preventative treatment.
