About Heptovir
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Heptovir.
Heptovir is the brand name for the drug lamivudine. It is an oral medication primarily used to treat infection caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the hepatitis-B virus. It is often taken in combination with zidovudine and other drugs for the treatment of HIV and AIDS. It is available only with a doctor's prescription.
Heptovir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS, but it does help prevent the HIV virus from reproducing and appears to slow the destruction of the immune system, thereby delaying the development of complications that often arise in cases of HIV infection. It will not prevent the spread of HIV. Heptovir will also not cure hepatitis-B. The long-term effects of Heptovir on hepatitis-B infection and the liver are currently unknown.
Heptovir carries with it the risk of serious side effects including nausea, vomiting, a feeling of unsteadiness, diarrhea, drowsiness, and muscle pain and cramping. Studies have shown that children with advanced AIDS were susceptible to pancreatitis and peripheral neuropathy, moreso than healthier children. Taking Heptovir is not recommended in combination of Interferon Alfa, Ribavirin, or Zalcitabine. However, it may be necessary for a patient to take Heptovir with these medications in some cases. If this is deemed necessary to take Heptovir with any of these medications, your doctor may adjust the dosage of one or both medications or how often they are taken. Infections and deteriorations of liver disease have been known to occur in patients with HIV and hepatitis-B infections who stop taking Heptovir. The effects of Heptovir on older patients have not been specifically studied. There have also been no adequate studies on the effect of Heptovir on pregnant women.
