About Juvederm
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Juvederm.
Juvederm is a gel implant used cosmetically to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, such as the nasolabial indentations between the nose and mouth. Juvederm gel is injected into the mid or deep dermis to create volume and elasticity. It can correct mild to deep wrinkles or folds. People with all skin types and pigments have reported success with this treatment.
Juvederm must not be injected into blood vessels; serious effects, such as embolization or infarction, may occur. Patients with active skin inflammation in the intended injection sites should wait until the skin clears before receiving treatment with Juvederm. These conditions may include rashes, pimples, hives or cysts.
Patients should not receive more than 20 mL of Juvederm per 130 pounds (60 kg) of body mass in a single year. The safety of larger doses has not been discerned. Juvederm has been tested specifically for facial treatments; clinical studies for effectiveness and safety in other body areas have not yet been conducted.
Minimal side effects have been reported with Juvederm. These generally include sensitivity at the injection site, such as redness, tenderness, bruising, swelling, firmness, discoloration, and lumps or bumps. Symptoms typically last less than seven days. In some cases, swelling, rash, itching, infection and other previously reported symptoms occur as much as four months after treatment. Necrosis has occurred within three days after treatment in some patients treated in the forehead and eyebrow regions.
The safe use of Juvederm has not been established in patients under the age of 18 or in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. There have been no studies for safe use in patients known to be susceptible to hypertrophic scarring, keloid formation or with pigment disorders.
To reduce the possibility of increased side effects, patients should avoid sun exposure, heat exposure, strenuous exercise and alcohol consumption in the first 24 hours after treatment with Juvederm.
