About Lopid
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Lopid.
Lopid is a medication that is used to lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels to prevent atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular complications in people with high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Lopid is most often prescribed in people with pancreatitis and people who have not been helped by other cholesterol-lowering medications.
Take Lopid twice daily, half an hour before eating a meal. People taking Lopid require regular blood tests to monitor their condition and make sure that the medication is working for them. Blood tests for people taking Lopid may include blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels and liver enzyme tests. People taking Lopid may also need to follow a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet and an exercise plan in order for their treatment to be effective. Drinking alcohol may decrease the efficacy of Lopid.
Certain drugs, including blood thinners, diabetes medications, insulin and some other cholesterol-lowering medications, especially statin drugs, can interfere with the efficacy of Lopid or exacerbate the side effects of the medication. Lopid can be taken with colestipol, colesevelam and cholestyramine, but these other cholesterol medications should be taken at least 2 hours before or after taking Lopid, not at the same time. Tell your doctor about all medications and supplements that you are taking before you start taking Lopid.
Side effects of Lopid include: upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, dizziness, drowsiness, decreased libido, cold symptoms and numbness or tingling in the extremities. More serious side effects of Lopid that require immediate medical attention include: severe, sharp stomach pain, burning urination, jaundice, muscle pain and dark colored urine, blurred vision, easy bruising, paleness and impaired blood clotting.
