About Lumigan
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Lumigan.
Lumigan ophthalmic solution is used to treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Lumigan decreases the amount of pressure inside the eye by increasing the drainage of aqueous fluid from the eye. Lumigan is often prescribed off-label to increase the appearance, length, and thickness of eyelashes.
To use Lumigan, tilt your head back, pull down your lower eye lid, and squeeze one drop into the eye without touching the dropper to the eye. Close your eye, and press on the corner of your eye next to your nose for one minute to prevent the medication from draining down the tear duct. Repeat with the other eye, if necessary.
Do not use Lumigan when you have contact lenses in; wait at least 15 minutes after using Lumigan before putting your contact lenses back into your eye. If your doctor has prescribed more than one drop of Lumigan per eye, wait 5 minutes before putting the next drop in. If you have more than one eye drop medication, wait 5 minutes before using it. Do not use more Lumigan than your doctor prescribes; the effectiveness of the medication decreases if it is overused. Do not touch the dropper tip of the bottle to any surface, including your hands and eyes; this could compromise the sterility of the medication and possibly lead to an eye infection.
Side effects of Lumigan include mild stinging or burning, dry eyes, watery eyes, dizziness, and eye discomfort. If you have vision changes, swelling, itching, or pain in your eye, discharge from the eye, or light sensitivity, seek medical attention immediately. If you are using Lumigan to treat glaucoma or ocular hypertension, you may experience fuller, longer eyelashes as a side effect. Changes in the skin of the eyelid may also occur. In addition, it is possible for the color of the iris of the eye to change due to an increase in brown pigment.
