About Mirapex
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Mirapex.
Mirapex is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms that occur as a result of Parkinson's Disease, a nervous system ailment that is characterized by poor balance, muscle control, and difficulty controlling the body's movements. It is also sometimes used to treat Restless Legs Syndrome, or RLS.
Mirapex is a dopamine agonist. It works by augmenting or replacing dopamine in the brain, a neurochemical that assists in controlling movement. Patients in both the early and advanced stages of Parkinson's Disease who participated in controlled studies experienced significant improvement in symptoms while taking Mirapex.
Mirapex treatments normally begin at the lowest possible dose, which is gradually increased over time. Some patients find it takes up to three weeks to notice a significant degree of symptom improvement.
While this drug has been found to be an effective treatment for Parkinson's Disease and RLS, it is not a cure. Patients should continue taking Mirapex even after they begin to feel better.
Mirapex should be taken at the same time every day. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is too close in time to the next dose, it should be skipped in favor of resuming the usual dosing schedule.
This medication has known side effects. They may include episodes of weakness, nausea, dizziness, or drowsiness. Other side effects might involve confusion, difficulty thinking or remembering, interrupted sleep, loss of appetite, weight loss, difficulty urinating, decreased sexual interest, or dry mouth. If the severity of any side effect begins to impact daily functioning patients should consult their health care provider as soona s possible.
Those who experience an allergic reaction to Mirapex, characterized by difficulty breathing, skin rashes, itching, or swelling of the face, throat, lips, and tongue, should seek medical assistance immediately.
