Namenda is an oral medication prescribed for the control and treatment of symptoms related to Alzheimer's Disease. It works by directly targeting a chemical in the brain which contributes to neural activity, suppressing some of the abnormally high activity levels witnessed in patients with moderate to severe dementia.

Namenda does not cure Alzheimer's. It is used to control symptoms and to slow down the rate of progression of the disease. Patients taking Namenda showed significant improvement in their abilities to navigate their daily routines and an increased ability to sustain normal conversation.

The medication is easy for patients and caregivers to administer as it can be taken with or without food. If the patient has difficulty swallowing pills, Namenda is also available in the form of a liquid oral solution which can be taken alone or sprinkled on food. The oral solution should not be taken in conjunction with any other liquid.

There is a short list of known drug interactions. These can include otherwise innocuous medications such as antacids or cough medicines. Patients should provide complete lists of all medications to their health care provider, including prescription and over the counter medicines as well as vitamins, minerals, dietary and herbal supplements. Patients should never begin a new medication of any kind without consulting their health care provider for possible drug interactions.

Side effects while taking Namenda are infrequently encountered but may include dizziness, confusion, headache, and constipation.

What is Memantine?

Memantine is the generic form of Namenda and can be purchased as a cheaper alternative to save money on your medication. The same ingredients are used in the manufacturing of the brand name version of this drug as in Memantine.
