Nexium is a drug categorized as a proton pump inhibitor which decreases stomach acid.
Nexium is used for the treatment of various disorders caused by excess acid in the stomach. One such disorder is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, commonly known as GERD. In this condition, acid from the stomach leaks back into the esophagus, which is not able to handle this acid. Thus heartburn and even tissue damage may result. It is also used in the promotion of healing erosive esophagitis caused by excess stomach acid.
In terms of prevention, Nexium can be used by people taking NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). These medications are commonly used in the treatment of arthritis, but can prevent the enzyme COX-1 from protecting the stomach lining, thus resulting in upset stomach and even bleeding. Hence, Nexium is often prescribed for people taking NSAIDS at the same time.
In addition, Nexium is used to treat those infected by H. pylori (helicobacter pylori). This is a bacterium known to cause peptic ulcers and possibly stomach cancer. It is believed that about half the world's population is infected by H. pylori, but not all people experience any symptoms. Taking Nexium helps prevent the occurrence of peptic and duodenal ulcers that can result from an H. pylori infection. Taken with the relevant antibiotics, Nexium can also help promote the healing of such ulcers.
