About Plavix
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Plavix.
What is Plavix?
Plavix is used to prevent internal blood clots from forming in patients with certain cardiac or vascular disorders or who have recently suffered a stroke or cardiac arrest. Since strokes and heart attacks are frequently caused by blood clots forming in arteries, Plavix can prevent such problems from arising.
Possible Side Effects
Patients taking Plavix should be aware of the possible side effects. If they encounter blood in their urine or tarry-looking stools, they should notify their physician as soon as possible. The same goes for vomiting up blood or material resembling coffee grounds. Other side effects could include abnormal bleeding or excessive bruising, sudden onset of weakness or numbness, sudden onset of confusion or headache, paleness or yellowing of the skin or eyes, feelings of heaviness or pain in the chest or pain spreading down the arm, and unexplained nausea or sweating.
Things To Avoid While Taking Plavix
People who take Plavix should also be aware of what substances or activities to avoid while taking this medication. They should not take any alcoholic beverages or NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and others without the doctor's consent. They should also avoid any activity or sport that raises the risk of bruising, cut or scrapes. If the patient is expecting to have dental work or surgery, their Plavix may need to be discontinued a few days prior to this event because of the risk of increased bleeding.
Other Information About Plavix:
The prescribing physician should be notified if the patient already suffers from any disorder resulting in blood clotting or bleeding, has a history of any type of stroke, kidney disease,, ulcerative colitis or stomach ulcers.
