Prilosec is a medication used to treat acid build-up in the stomach, predominantly stemming from a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also prescribed for Zollinger-Edison syndrome and dyspepsia, two conditions that cause too much acid in the stomach. It is a proton pump inhibitor, meaning that it prevents certain enzyme systems from entering certain cells in the stomach lining which cause the acid reflux.
Those who are nursing or pregnant should consult a doctor prior to taking as it can be dangerous. Children and the elderly should not have any problems taking Prilosec. It is important to inform the doctor of any medications, including vitamins taken, as interactions can occur. Taking the medication with food should be used with discretion. Those with osteoporosis and liver problems should use caution when taking Prilosec.
The usual adult dose for GERD is 20mg per day, and the doctor may eventually increase the dose. Other disorders require 40-60mg per day. A missed dose should be taken immediately, but skipped if it is too close to the next dose. Those from Asian backgrounds may need to take a lower dose.
Side effects include stomach cramping and diarrhea. Rarer side effects may include chest pain, constipation or cough. Prolonged conditions should immediately be reported to a physician.
