Protonix is used to treat an overwhelming build-up of acid in the stomach. It is used to treat erosive esophagitis, commonly known as heartburn, caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition where the acid in the stomach slides back up into the esophagus.
There is not enough information for pediatric or geriatric use, but women who are pregnant may take this drug with some caution. Also, taking this drug for an extended period of time can result in the body's inability to absorb vitamin B-12 correctly.
The usual dose is one 40mg tablet once a day, to be taken at least 30 minutes prior to a meal. Protonix should not be discontinued abruptly unless instructed by a doctor. Missed doses should be taken as soon as possible. Some mild side effects are normal such as abdominal and stomach cramping. These usually only last a few days. More severe reactions can include dizziness, sweating and trouble breathing. Prolonged or unusual side effects should immediately be reported to a physician.
It is important to notify the doctor of all other medications, including supplements, to avoid interactions. In some cases, certain foods cause an interaction with Protonix.
