What is Tegretol/Tegretol CR? Tegretol is considered an anticonvulsant as it interferes with the nervous impulses that cause certain types of nerve pain and seizures, inclding epilepsy and the pain related to trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy.
Before taking Tegretol/Tegretol CR: Before taking this drug, patients should inform their doctors if they have any drug allergies or any of the following conditions: lupus, kidney or liver disease, glaucoma, pophyria, heart disease, a history of mental illness or a history of serious medication side effects.
Female patients should also inform their doctors if they are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
While taking Tegretol Patients should consult as soon as possible with their prescribing physician if they experience any of the following: suicidal ideation, behavior or mood changes, anxiety or depression, feeling physically or mentally hyperactive, feelings of hostility, desire to hurt others.
Also the patients' ability to ward off infections may be compromised while taking Tegretol because of the drug's action of lowering the white blood cell count. As a result, bleeding more easily or getting sick from others who are sick becomes more problematic.
After initiating this treatment, patients' symptoms may show no improvement for up to four weeks. Tegretol should not be discontinued by patients even if they feel better, especially since increased seizure activity or other side effects could result from stopping it suddenly.

Patients should not take Tegretol/Tegretol CR who may be allergic to certain antidepressant medication or caramazepine, have used an MAO inhibitor recently, are taking nefazodone, or have a history of bone marrow problems. |
