Tricor is classified as an antilipemic agent. It is used in combination with a low-fat diet and exercise to reduce high triglycerides and cholesterol levels. It works to lower high levels of blood triglycerides by controlling the liver�s production of triglycerides and increases the removal of them from the blood. High levels of triglycerides and cholesterol raise the risk of atherosclerosis, which can lead to heart attack and stroke.

Tricor should be taken exactly as prescribed. Do not take this medication in larger doses or for longer periods unless prescribed by a physician. Each dose should be taken with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Follow the label directions closely. Do not use tablets that are broken or chipped. For optimum benefits of Tricor, take regularly. If also taking the medications Colestid or Questran, take these medications either 4 to 6 hours before taking Tricor or at least 1 hour after taking Tricor. Avoid taking either of these medications at the same time as taking Tricor. Because Tricor is only one part of a program, which also includes exercise, weight control and diet, follow the program closely. While using Tricor, regular blood tests will be required to ensure the medication is working effectively.

Individuals with gallbladder disease, severe kidney disease, cirrhosis or hepatitis may need special tests and dosage adjustments to ensure safety while taking Tricor. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Tricor as alcohol can raise the levels of triglycerides and may cause damage to the liver when combined with Tricor. Because Tricor has been linked to a rare, but serious side effect that affects muscles, contact the physician immediately if symptoms of unusual pain, tenderness or weakness are noticed in muscles, especially if a flu-like feeling or fever accompanies these symptoms.

What is Fenofibrate?

Fenofibrate is the generic therapeutic equivalent to Tricor and can be purchased as a cheaper alternative to save money on your medication. The same active ingredients are used in the manufacturing of the brand name version of this drug as in Fenofibrate.
