Uloric is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used for chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout. In other words, it lowers the acid levels of uric acid buildup in the joints. The buildup causes sudden attacks of swelling, redness and pain, and uloric prevents this from occurring.
Children, the elderly, and women who are nursing or pregnant should use caution when taking Uloric. Those taking medications for kidney transplants, COPD or leukemia should not take this medication unless under strict supervision from a doctor. Also, those with heart and liver disease should notify their doctor prior to taking Uloric.
The usual adult dose is 40 to 80mg per day, though the doctor may gradually increase the dosage. This medication may be taken with or without food, and should be taken at the same time every day to achieve maximum benefit. Missed doses should be taken immediately. Concurrent treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) is likely with Uloric to prevent gout flare-ups.
Common side effects include nausea and mild stomach or abdominal cramping. Rarer side effects include dizziness, dark urine and yellowing of the eyes or skin. This can indicate abnormal liver function. These and any other prolonged conditions should immediately be reported to a doctor.
