Valtrex is an antiviral drug that slows the growth of the herpes virus. It is used to treat cold sores and shingles in adults. Valtrex is also indicated for the treatment of genital herpes in adults as a suppressant and for symptom control after an outbreak. Valtrex lessens pain and itching, promotes healing for sores, and prevents more sores from forming. However, it is not a cure for the herpes virus.
Valtrex is taken by mouth three times a day for seven days to treat shingles. For genital herpes, the recommended dose is twice daily for five days.
