About Vfend
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Vfend.
Vfend is a prescription medication used to treat invasive fungal infections, such as aspergillosis, that occur and spread inside the human body. Vfend is a type of triazole. It gains its effectiveness by destroying fungal cell walls. This either slows growth or eradicates the fungus over the course of treatment.
In a randomized, controlled study, 53% of patients on Vfend experienced complete or partial elimination of all symptoms associated with the presence of the fungus within twelve weeks, as compared to 32% who were taking another medication. The Vfend group also showed a marked increase in survival rates in the twelve week time frame.
Some patients begin a Vfend regimen by intravenous injection while in a hospital setting, and are then prescribed tablets to take as recovery progresses. Vfend should be taken as directed by a health care provider. It is usually prescribed to be taken twice daily, every twelve hours, on an empty stomach. The doses should be taken at the same time each day to maintain the necessary level of drug in the bloodstream.
Length of treatment time may vary depending upon the patient's overall health and the type of infection the drug is intended to fight. The minimum course of treatment is usually fourteen days. Those who have aspergillosis may be on this antifungal medication for several months.
Vfend has some known side effects, including abnormal vision or visual disturbances, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, flushing, and vomiting. More serious side effects might manifest as chills, confusion, upset stomach, fatigue, accelerated heartbeat and breathing, confusion, chest pain, and fever. Patients who experience symptoms which interfere in their daily routines should seek the advice of their health care providers immediately.
