About Viread
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Viread.
Viread is an antiviral medication prescribed in the treatment of HIV infections. A nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor, Viread works by slowing the spread of the virus in the human body so that the immune system can assume its normal functions. The drug also reduces the chances of new infections or cancers occurring. Viread's ability to reduce virus growth in the body also makes it useful in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infections.
Viread is not a cure for HIV or chronic hepatitis B, nor will it prevent the spread of these viruses to others.
This medication is usually prescribed to be taken once a day, with or without food. It should be taken as close to the same time each day as possible so that a constant stream of the antiviral drug is maintained in the body. Doses should never be skipped, and if a dose is forgotten it should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, patients should never risk "doubling up" on a dose of Viread in order to make up for a forgotten dose.
Patients taking Viread for the first time may experience symptoms of other infections. This is because the immune system is actually working better, not worse. However, those who experience trouble breathing, high fevers, severe headaches, or visual disturbances should talk to their health care providers as soon as possible.
Viread has been linked with some side effects. The most common side effect among those treated for chronic hepatitis B is nausea. For those with HIV, the most common are headaches, dizziness, skin rashes, depression, diarrhea, and nausea. Those who experience severe or incapacitating side effects should consult with their health care providers immediately.
