Vytorin is a medication which is prescribed to reduce the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the body. It is a combination of ezeteimibe and simvastatin and is used to reduce the amount of LDL or "bad" cholesterol level taken up in the intestines while increasing HDL or "good" cholesterol in the blood. Vytorin is known to work best in conjunction with a heart-healthy diet and exercise program.

Unless instructed otherwise by a licensed health care provider, patients should refrain from consuming grapefruit products while taking Vytorin, as it can elevate the amount of medication in the bloodstream. This medication is usually prescribed to be taken once daily, with or without food. It should be taken at the same time every day to maintain the proper medication level in the blood. It can take up to four weeks before the full effects of this medicine are achieved. If a dose is missed it should be taken as soon as it is remembered, unless it is too close in time for the next dose. Vytorin should never be "doubled up on" to make up for missed doses.

Vytorin is not known to cause serious side effects. Some less serious side effects occur occasionally and include depression, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, joint pain, sleep disruptions, or common cold symptoms like sneezing, sore throat, stuffy nose. Patients taking digoxin, warfarin, or any other statin medication should consult closely with a qualified health care provider before taking Vytorin. Allergies to Vytorin are rare. However, anyone exhibiting symptoms of an allergic reaction to this or any other medication should stop taking it and get medical assistance immediately.

What is Ezetimibe + Simvastatin?

Ezetimibe + Simvastatin is the generic equivalent of Vytorin and can be purchased as a cheaper alternative to save money on your medication. The same active ingredients are used in the manufacturing of the brand name version of this drug as in Ezetimibe + Simvastatin.
