About Zyloprim
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Zyloprim.
Zyloprim works to reduce high uric acid levels that can cause gout and a particular type of kidney stones, or which may be a result of certain chemotherapy treatments. Zyloprim may increase gout attacks at first, although frequency and severity should diminish within a few weeks. Wait until an existing acute gout attack subsides before taking Zyloprim. Drink plenty of water while taking this medication.
There is risk of severe allergic reaction to Zyloprim, which may increase if you have kidney problems or take a thiazide-type diuretic. Inform your doctor immediately if you notice allergic symptoms such as rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of face, tongue or throat.
Tell your doctor about your medical history and all medications you take, especially kidney or liver problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, and the medications ampicillin, amoxicillin, dicumarol, azathioprine, sulfinpyrazone, mercaptopurine, and thiazide-type diuretics.
Patients should be tested regularly for liver and kidney function. Those with impaired function may need reduced dosages. Zyloprim is not generally recommended for children. Nursing mothers, women who are pregnant or who become pregnant should not take Zyloprim.
Because Zyloprim can cause drowsiness, take precautions when performing activities that require alertness, including operating a car or other machinery, until you know how it affects you.
Call your physician immediately if you experience pain or bleeding during urination, or have reduced or no urination at all. Seek medical help if you begin to bruise easily; experience unusual bleeding from mouth, rectum or nose; experience severe tingling, numbness or muscle weakness; notice jaundice or yellowing of eyes or skin; have fever or persistent sore throat, persistent nausea or vomiting, or severe stomach or abdominal pain.
Other side effects may include diarrhea, mild rashes, and increased gouty attacks. If these symptoms persist or increase, contact your physician.
