About Zymar
The information below should not be taken as a substitute for qualified medical advice. Consult your health care provider before taking Zymar.
The ophthalmic solution Zymar is a prescription eye drop that is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis or pink eye. Zymar works by targeting and killing the bacteria that have caused the infection. This medicine should be used in its entirety to ensure the infection is completely gone. Symptoms should improve while using this medication but be sure to continue use even if symptoms subside.
Typical usage of zymar is the prescribed number of drops in each eye ever two hours for the first two days followed by application four times a day until the treatment is complete. For best results, use this medicine around the same time every day. If symptoms do not improve with treatment, if they start to get worse or if new problems with the eye develop, contact a doctor to discuss these issues.
Prior to administering this medication, thoroughly wash hands. Take care to keep the dropper from touching any surface including the hands or the eye. If the dropper touches any other surface, it may become contaminated and cause further infections in the eye.
Patients should avoid drinking caffeine while using zymar because this medication can strengthen the effects of caffeine. Do not wear contact lenses while an eye infection is present. Advise the doctor of any medications that are being taken before using zymar. Theophylline, blood thinners such as coumadin and cyclosporine used orally or in a drop as well as other medications may interact with the ingredients in zymar.
As with all medicines, certain side effects have been associated with treatment using the medication zymar. Some minor side effects include watery eyes, headache, puffy eyes, redness, itching, irritation or burning and a bad taste in the mouth after application of the drops. More serious side effects may include any sign of a skin rash, oozing, drainage, vision changes, eye pain, increased sensitivity to light, severe discomfort, pain or swelling. If any serious side effects should occur, call a doctor as soon as possible.
