Spiriva is a drug that belongs to anticholinergic class of medications. It improves breathing in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This drug is used for the long term maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with COPD, bronchitis or emphysema. It improves breathing by relaxing the air passages which carry air to and from the lungs. This drug starts to show its effect within 30 minutes of its use and lasts for one day. Spiriva is available in capsule form. The capsules contain dry powder formulation of Tiotropium. It is prescribed for oral inhalation only with the help of HandiHaler device. This drug is approved by many drug regulatory authorities around the world.
Tiotropium bromide is the active ingredient present in Spiriva and lactose monohydrate is the inactive ingredient.
Spiriva Action (How it Works?)
Natural Acetylcholine in the lungs acts on muscarinic receptors and causes the muscle in the airways to contract. In chronic obstructive lung diseases like bronchitis or emphysema the airways are narrowed. Spiriva inhaler is used to overcome this problem. This drug works by opening the airways in the lungs by blocking muscarinic receptors. It stops the action of acetylcholine that is found on the muscle surrounding the airways. The relaxed airway muscles make it easier for the COPD patients to breathe properly.
